DirectgovKids
Client: Department for Children, Schools and Families
Guardian Professional was asked by the
DCFS to produce a website that would open up communication between
government and children aged 5 to 11. Our brief was to give children a fun and interactive
environment where they could explore and learn about the role of government and
its various departments and functions.
We created Directgov Kids. A self-contained virtual world, this website encourages
children to think of themselves as young citizens with rights and responsibilities.
Featuring a host of interactive activities, the site introduces children to the
concepts of citizenship, democracy and political participation. The concepts are
aligned with specific Public Service Agreement (PSA) targets.
The site includes a teachers’ area with key stage 1 and 2 curriculum support subject
materials. It also includes a parents’ area with guidance and support on using the
site with children.
Directgov Kids was launched at the end of 2006, after successful user testing. We
are now extending it to include children aged 11 to 14. There will be a new look
and feel as well as suitable ways for this age group to access content. This five-year
project began in 2005.
