GLOW

Client: Learning and Teaching Scotland

Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS) commissioned Guardian Professional to produce a new online news service. Glow is a national schools intranet, digitally linking Scotland’s 800,000 educators and pupils, which supports Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence. Glow is funded by the Scottish Executive and managed by LTS.

The brief was to create a stimulating e-learning classroom resource that aids teaching and learning, while encouraging pupils to take an interest in current affairs. The resulting website, learnnewsdesk@LTS, engages young people with the important issues of the day in a challenging yet accessible way.

The website covers international, UK-wide and Scottish news stories. Guardian Professional leverages the editorial expertise of Guardian journalists and their knowledge of the education sector to ensure the site is updated daily with news stories, which are also published in Gaelic. The site also features podcasts, an extensive news archive, news in pictures, useful web links, pupils’ news and comments, tips for writing news reports, classroom activities, news quizzes and curriculum links.

Guardian Professional and LTS piloted the service in June 2007 across six local authorities, with an official launch at the Scottish Learning Festival in September 2007. All Scottish schools will have access to learnnewsdesk@LTS through Glow when the intranet is rolled out.
